New Technology Gadgets - Nuclear battery

Are you tired of your short laptop battery life with only a few hours? Would you like the charge of your mobile phone to last a couple of months? Well, the answer to your “prayers” might be the nuclear batteries, which are been developed at the University of Missouri. They are designed especially for providing a lasting source of energy. And some people think these batteries could replace the current ones, including those used by the electrical cars. According to the creators, a nuclear battery has a very enormous capacity to generate electricity when compared to a regular one.

The batteries have always been the Achilles’ heel of the mobile devices. Usually, the designers of electronic devices for mass consumption (like laptops or media players) use small displays or screens that are not very bright in order to save the scarce energy resources that are provided from the regular batteries. But the new nuclear battery would bring a solution based on a liquid semiconductor (rather than a solid semiconductor) that will produce a much longer lifetime for the battery. The reason is the solid semiconductors are attacked constantly by some radioactive elements used by other types of batteries, while the liquid semiconductor is quite resistant to these attacks. Although the term “nuclear” can be a little perturbing, the fact is that these batteries are not very different from those batteries used in, for example, medical pacemakers.

The new radioisotope battery has the size of a penny and provides much more power than the traditional ones because, according to the researches, its capacity is very superior. Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Missouri, said that the radioisotope battery “can provide power density that is six orders of magnitude higher than chemical batteries”. That is to say, it provides no less than a million times more charge than any “normal” battery.

Kwon and his research team have spent enough time working to solve many problems that they have encountered when developing this type of battery. One important thing is the batteries need to be small and thin in order to be practical and useful; this way, they could be used to power watches and small electronic devices. As mentioned before, the prototype (which you can see in the picture below) has the size and thickness of a penny, but the researchers think they can achieve a thinner battery. In order to do this, Kwon has required the collaboration of another professor: J. David Robertson (chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor). Together, they hope to maximize the power of the nuclear batteries as well as reduce the size and test other materials to make additional improvements. Kwon thinks that the final battery, which would be used in commercial gadgets, could be thinner than a human hair. For the moment, the research team have required a provisional patent in order to protect the exclusive right to use this invention.

Samsung DVD player and Blu-Ray: SH-B083 - First internal multi-format drive

Samsung Electronics has introduced its first internal multi-format Blu-ray drive in the electronic market: SH-B083. This Blu-ray disc drive is compatible with high-capacity discs of up to 25GB if they are single-layer discs, or up to 50GB if they are double-layer discs. And, of course, the drive can be used with personal computers (PCs).

This drive reads BD-R and BD-ROM discs at up to 8x speeds. Besides, the CDs are read at up to 48x speeds and the DVDs at up to 16x. Also, the new SH-B083 multi-format drive features an average access speed of 350 ms. On the other hand, besides reading Blu-ray discs, it reads and writes CD and DVD.
The SH-B083 comes with two lenses for more stable reading and writing. This way, a lens is reserved to read BD discs, while the other one reads and writes CDs and DVDs. In addition, the Spherical Aberration Compensation Technology (SACT) improves the reading of those BD discs where the protective layer doesn’t have an uniform thickness.

Also, the precision step control technology (PSCT) allows users to enjoy a higher resolution in the optical pickup head unit (OPU), which is an absolutely necessary requirement due to the smaller track pitch of BD discs (when they are compared with CDs and DVDs).

google-android-mobile-phone

Not long ago Google announced that the source code at the core of its Android platform would be available for free to anyone wanting to use it and develop with. This open source approach has opened up the market to more phones manufacturers and developers able to make Android based phones but it also means there will be a host of application to download for it - and I suspect we will see more useful applications than the mainly games ridden App Store on iTunes (I want a good Exchange Mail client). It looks like Asus, Motorola and Samsung will be the next to follow Kogan and the rather averagely designed HTC G1 with a Google Android phone early next year, hopefully making the most of the Android platform finally. - (Read more Information)

40″ OLED TV

Currently your best bet for an OLED is the Sony XEL-1 which I also included in my top Christmas gadgets list. It’s not the best price screen per inch but certainly is the best looking on the market. But as with all good technology the price will start to come down and screen sizes will go up. Samsung have already prototyped early this year a 40″ Full HD OLED display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and is under 1cm thick. Samsung therefore have proved it can all be done so it just a case of making them at a consumer friendly price and I think next year they will we will see these large sized OLEDs appearing.-(Read more inforamition)

Nokia 5530 vs 5800 – Mobiles Compared

The current hot product on the cell phone market is the brand new Nokia 5530 – The third ‘”Touch” phone by Nokia.

As you may already know, 5530 is a bit cheaper than 5800.

But what are the differences except the price?
The Nokia confirmed it has 5530 no UMTS / HSDPA.
If you want to surf the mobile is of course a clear downside.
Similarly, no GPS on board.
When 5530 is “only” a 4GB card in, the 5800 had 8GB of memory.
And has the display from the 5530 “only” 2.9 “compared to the 3.2″ from the 5800th.

Otherwise, thanks to symbian on the functions and capabilities produces pretty much the same …..
So if you don’t mind having GPS or UMTS, then I would still buy Nokia 5530 - it is smaller and more stylish.

I personally use a lot of UMTS (Internet) and I regularly use GPS.
So I am completely satisfied with my 5800.
Would certainly be nice if that were slim and stylish as the 5530, but when
I decided to do without GPS and UMTS must, then I would rather stay in 5800.

Here is a comparison of Nokia 5530 and its older brother called Nokia 5800 and their main features.

Nokia 5530 main features

5530 looks striking with its ’stainless steel’ cover. It offers a generous 2.9 inch screen in 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio (360×640 pixels) and a 3.2 megapixel camera. The device lacks support for UMTS / HSDPA and you do not have high speed internet will reach, unless you use the WiFi facility which fortunately still has. The solid battery (1000 mAh) ensures that your 27 hours for continuous music listening. By default you will receive a 4GB memory card, which accommodate more than 1000 unique mobile numbers.

Sony Alpha A350 Review

With a sensor resolution of 14.2-megapixels, the A350 occupies a relatively new band in the digital SLR market, along with the 14.6-megapixel, £800 Pentax K20D. Neither market leaders Canon nor second-placed Nikon has anything that directly competes in this band, which must be helping with Sony's stated intent to overtake Nikon and put a serious dent in Canon's seemingly unassailable lead. The A350 is currently priced at a very competitive £449.99 body-only, £499.99 with an 18-70mm zoom lens, or £649.99 as a two-lens kit with the addition of a 55-200mm zoom
Nikon's closest competitor is the D80, currently £499 body only or £639.99 with an 18-70mm lens, but the D80 is only 10 megapixels. Olympus offers the E-520 for £499.99 body-only or £549.99 with a Four-Thirds system 14-42mm lens, but again it is only 10 megapixels. Canon has a slightly closer match in the shape of the popular 12.2-megapixel EOS 450D (review coming soon) at £459.99 body only or £499.99 with an 18-55mm lens.

Canon Digital Rebel XS Review

Canon has shaken up its entry-level offerings for the second time in 2008 with the launch of the Canon Rebel XS consumer-grade DSLR. Announced way back in June for the European market (as the EOS 1000D) but only recently available on this side of the Atlantic, the Rebel XS slots in at the very bottom of Canon's DSLR line – providing a second new entry-level option in Canon's lineup and a lower-cost, lower-res alternative to the relatively advanced XSi.

FEATURES OVERVIEW

The Rebel XS represents a shift in strategy for Canon; with the manufacturer bringing a second simultaneously developed and supported DSLR to the bottom-tier consumer market. Traditionally, Canon has demoted its previous-generation Rebel into the entry-level spot with each new announcement. While the new XS diverges from this formula insofar as it was purpose-built for beginning DSLR users (rather than simply a more advanced hand-me-down, as in the case of the XTi that it replaces), the net result really isn't that different from what we've seen before: in terms of both hardware and design, the XS is very much an amalgam of XSi and XTi.

To this end, the XS uses the previous-generation 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor as well as the XTi's smaller 2.5 inch LCD. XSi-level upgrades include DIGIC III processing, Canon's advanced "Picture Style" menu that allows shooters to fine-tune image processing (and includes space for several user-defined custom settings), and an impressively fast advertised continuous shooting speed with a new-for-XS unlimited buffer for JPEG shooting.

The XS also brings the XSi's live view system (which allows the screen to be used for shot composition) all the way down to Canon's entry-level model. The XS's live view implementation moves beyond the basic with the addition of a contrast-detection AF mode that allows the camera to auto focus without interrupting the on-screen preview to do so – a feat not possible in the first generation of live view DSLRs.

As with previous Rebel DSLRs, the XS's shooting modes are divided into two basic groups, which Canon terms the "Basic Zone" and the "Creative Zone." The Basic Zone is made up of the XS's auto exposure and scene preset options. Basic Zone presets are as follows:

* Auto Exposure: Camera selects all exposure values
* Portrait: Settings are optimized for portraiture, with adjustments to image tone and flash mode
* Landscape: Increased contrast mode that favors narrower apertures
* Macro: Moderate aperture settings are preferred in this mode
* Sports: Continuous drive and AF options are enabled; higher shutter speeds are preferenced
* Night Scene: Enables slow flash sync to capture both subject and background
* Flash Suppressed: Flash is disabled

Note that in the Basic Zone, many exposure control and general shooting options (including AF drive mode, metering options, and flash modes) are locked out or limited.

Canon's Creative Zone modes encompass the full range of expected user-controlled exposure options, with a few interesting additions:

* Program: Auto exposure mode with user control for flash settings, metering mode, etc.
* Shutter Priority: User selects shutter speed, and camera calculates aperture for correct exposure
* Aperture Priority: User selects aperture, and camera calculates shutter speed for correct exposure
* Manual: User selects both aperture and shutter speed
* Auto Depth of Field: Camera automatically calculates aperture to ensure that depth of field covers all focus points

Like most DSLRs, playback options are fairly basic with the XS. The camera does incorporate an orientation sensor that automatically rotates portrait-orientation images during playback. As with Canon's point-and-shoots, it's also easy to scroll through images either 10 or 100 at a time using the control dial.

Panasonic target Middle East market with new TVs

The Middle East oil sheikhs
and super rich monarchs are certainly pretty shrewd when it comes to investing, as their practically sitting atop gold mines of different colors, giving them acces to vast riches no thanks to the world’s ever growing craving for more fuel. Knowing that many people living in the Middle East do earn more than a comfortable salary, Panasonic has targeted that geographical area in their latest effort to push across another nine LCD and eight plasma high definition VIERA TVs. These new TVs, regardless of technology behind the screen, will offer a trio of distinct advantages for the consumer, including enhanced unique features like ‘Full-time Full HD’ and VIERA Image Viewer function for the playback of pictures and videos by SD card - something Panasonic proudly touts as the first in the world within a flat panel TV context.
This year’s VIERA models will come with the enhanced VIERA Image Viewer function, where it will be standard across all 2009 models. This allows consumers to plug in their SD memory card into the corresponding slot, having the ability to review what they’ve just shot on their digital cameras or camcorders on a huge display, and needless to say the image quality would be superb if you’re using a High Definition camera to record all that video, as the screen’s high resolution won’t do VGA-quality video any justice. As for Full-time Full HD, this unique development by Panasonic will see improved motion image performance, contrast and colour reproduction to deliver a new level of picture quality to consumers. Perfect for folks who enjoy both still and motion pictures, Full-time Full HD will provide razor-sharp motion images, an experience similar to that they enjoy at the cinema.

These new Panasonic panels are made in Japan, and boast a lifetime rating of up to 100,000 hours - that’s roughtly 30 years of viewing assuming you plant yourself in the couch for 8 hours a day, letting the TV feed you with shjow after show. Other features of these lead free panels include being a mere 1″ thin, boasting a wider viewing angle of 178 degrees.

Iphone 3G S ready to challenge Blackberry

Well, Apple’s new iPhone 3G S launched on Friday morning with several new featrues with improved and better technology. This new version of the iPhone has OS 3.0 in it with added features along with 46 security patches which makes it more beneficial for businessmen who were using Blackberry from a long time. Iphone 3G S is already challening the Blackberry in terms of the features and better security in it.The new OS 3.0 gives a driving download speed to the Iphone. Some reviews say that soon its going to leave Blackberry behind. The new Iphone has the capability to record and send voice recordigns on the move. Also, the feature copy and paste is added to this new Iphone. And for security purposes there an excellent feature called Remote Wipe which deletes all your data of the Iphone if its lost, so that no one would be able to use it. One area in which the iPhone 3GS does have an advantage with enterprises is Web applications. “Web applications are very important to enterprises these days and we’ve tested various devices to see which ones can read the formatting on our reports, and the iPhone does a very good job there,” Greengart said.

But the time will tell that who is gonna succeed and who is gonna move forward.

Apple MacBook Pro 15in June 2009 release

Review The recent rapid evolution of Apple’s laptop range continues apace this month, with changes to virtually every model. The 15in MacBook Pro – or, to be precise, the 15.4in MacBook Pro – received a major update back in October when Apple introduced its new ‘unibody’ aluminium design, so we weren’t expecting anything other than the occasional speed-bump in the immediate future. However, there’s more to this latest model than a simple tweak to the processor speed.

The previous model was available in two main configurations, costing £1399 with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM, and 250GB hard disk, or a rather hefty £1749 with 2.53GHz processor, 4Gb RAM and 320GB hard disk. The 2.4GHz model has now been dropped altogether, while the price of the 2.53GHz model has been slashed to £1299 – although the hard disk on that model has been cut to 250GB and it has just a GeForce 9400M graphics processor, rather than the twin graphics processors found in the other 15” models.

There’s also a 2.66GHz model with 4GB RAM and 320GB hard disk that costs £1499, while the new top-of-range model that we test here comes in at £1699 with a speedy 2.8GHz processor, 4GB RAM and 500GB hard disk. All models have a 15.4in backlit LED screen with 1440x900 resolution.

It’s good to see that Apple has paid attention to the reviews – including ours – that commented on the rising prices of the new models that were introduced in October. Mind you, anyone that paid £1739 for the 2.53GHz model in October will probably be spitting blood right now.

As expected, our Mac benchmarking tests show that this model is about 10 per cent faster than its predecessor, making it the fastest Mac laptop we’ve reviewed to date. Like its predecessor, this model is also equipped with two separate graphics processors. For routine computing tasks there’s an integrated GeForce 9400M, or you can switch to a more powerful – and power-hungry – 9600M GT for games and other graphics-intensive tasks.
Apple MacBook Pro 15in

Closed system: the built-in battery can't be swapped out

The 9600M GT produces good performance, hitting almost 120fps in Doom 3, although the 63fps that we got from the less-powerful 9400M wasn’t bad either. To really put the machine through its paces we decided to use the Mac’s Boot Camp feature to instal Windows Vista and run a few PC benchmarks as well.

Firefox 3.5 - it's not a 'web upgrade'

Review "This isn't just an upgrade of the browser. It's also an upgrade for the web", says Mike Beltzner, Firefox product director, in his What's New in 3.5 video.

Hyperbole for sure, but it highlights the most interesting aspect of the browser wars, which is how each player is trying to influence the direction of web development.

From the user's perspective, Firefox 3.5 is better - but not dramatically so. The first notable new feature is private browsing, a catch-up with Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Google Chrome that lets you browse web sites without leaving traces in browser history or temporary files. Next comes Tear Off Tabs, which - as in Apple's Safari - allows tabs to be dragged into a separate browser window. A neat touch is Recently Closed Tabs and Recently Closed Windows, which gets you back where you were after accidentally closing a page.
Location-aware browsing is more exciting. A website can prompt for your location, and subject to your consent, Firefox will call a Google API to work out where you are. It implements a proposed W3C standard and has potential, though hardly any sites make use of it at the moment. The other snag is that Firefox currently relies on WiFi points and IP addresses and does not use GPS even if present. Which may explain why it was out by 125 miles when I tried it.
Geolocation in Firefox 3.5

Location-aware browsing: great, if accuracy's not your thing

The next perspective is performance. Firefox 3.5 has a new JavaScript engine called TraceMonkey that is dramatically faster. In our tests, it executed the Sunspider benchmark nearly three times faster than Firefox 3.0, though not quite as fast as Google's Chrome. When it comes to DOM manipulation though, there was little improvement.

Firefox scores well against its rivals in memory usage. IE8 and Chrome use a new process for each tab, which eats memory. Informal tests suggest that Firefox uses less RAM even with just one page open, and its advantage grows as further tabs are opened. In a quick informal test, Firefox used about the same RAM as Safari. Only Opera was slimmer.

Good for users then, but no big deal. What about web development? This is where it gets interesting. On the Acid3 test, at which IE8 fails badly, Firefox 3.5 is nearly but not quite perfect. The new browser also implements a good chunk of HTML 5, including an enhanced Canvas element with a text API, audio and video elements, a simple local storage API, downloadable fonts (a CSS feature), and JavaScript threading using web workers. The underlying story is an effort to push developers away from Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight and towards standard HTML, when implementing rich content, multimedia, and rich internet applications.

In this respect, Firefox 3.5 is more a statement of intent than a realistic alternative to Flash. The audio element only supports Ogg Vorbis or uncompressed wave audio, while video is limited to Ogg Theora.

Standards tussle

Adobe's Flash, by contrast, offers a consistent cross-browser runtime, integrated with its Creative Suite design tools that are used everywhere. It may be hard to convince Microsoft to implement standards that compete with Silverlight in IE. Still, it is a significant statement of intent, and a few years from now Adobe's hold on web multimedia may be less secure.

Another key question is whether Google, Mozilla, and Apple can avoid fragmentation of evolving standards. Google's Gears extension overlaps with much of what is in HTML 5.0, but has its own specification. Features like local SQL support are different in Safari and Chrome and not present at all in Firefox except for extensions.

When he worked at Google, Mozilla's Dion Almaer argued that: "HTML 5 and Gears will converge in the not too distant path." They need to. Otherwise, both will be undermined.

Existing users will find Firefox 3.5 solid though unexciting and will stick with it - if only for the sake of its rich library of add-ons, which are now its main advantage over Safari and Chrome. Developers will like the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine along with more bits of HTML 5.0.

In summary: a good release, which increases the pressure on Microsoft's IE. ®

Nokia 5800 : XpressMusic Review

The Bundle
Neat bundle package set. Phone + 3.5mm Headphones + Multimedia Controller 3.5mm jack + Strap + Stand + TV Out Cables + Extra Stylus + Manuals + Warranty Card + Battery + Adapter + Mini CD + 8GB MicroSD Card.
Thumbs up: Neat bundle.
Thumbs down:The default scratch guard on the phone has a design all over it. Nokia should have either left it completely blank or bundled a fully plain scratch guard along in the bundle.

The Startup
So I popped the battery in and started the device. The device bootup time was less than a minute up and running completely. The usual Nokia logo at the startup ( which can be replaced by Text as usual as in older models as well )
I loaded about 2-3 gig of data and even with it , the bootups finishes under 30 seconds currently.

Dell Studio 15 (1555) Review

Configuration :
Here are the details(as)I configured it on Dell's site :
1. Color- Jet Black with Black U-Trim.
Now the thing is though it is of matte finish but still it gets easily smudged and attracts all sorts of prints. Overall looks like a plain Jane and good.
2. Processor- T6400@2GHz 800MHz FSB 2MB Cache. It has TDP of 35W and runs OK but after working on E8400 on my desktop, it sometimes feels a bit slow.
3.OS- This is where the ship sank! The OS was Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit. I reformatted the HDD and reinstalled Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit. After that I wanted XP too but whenever I tried to install XP I was greeted with a BSOD.

No matter which XP I tried, 32-bit or 64-bit, SP2 or SP3(I've numerous *ahem* copies), I got BSOD. The code was 0X0000007B(0XF78DA524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). Then I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on it and it worked like a charm. Afterwards due to my project reasons I had to revert to R.H.E.L 5 and here everything went south. None of the device, Ethernet,Audio,Wireless,Bluetooth or Graphics, was detected leaving me with no option but to revert back to Ubuntu.
4.Screen- Its the default 15.6inch 1366x768 2.0MP integrated webcam WLED screen. On it, the very first time of use I noticed a dead pixel at the bottom of the screen.
5.RAM- 2x2GB 800MHz DDR2 RAM. Dell is offering upto 8GB of RAM on this model but it costs 31K!
6.HDD- 320GB WD hard disk.
7.Optical Drive- Slot Load 8X DVD+/-RW Drive with DVD+R double layer write capability. Things got no Eject button!
8.GPU- 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
9.Battery- 9-cell battery. Gives the run time of 9Hrs and 30minutes!
10.Speakers- Built-in speakers are of decent quality and if you want to watch a movie they can easily get the job done.
Ports on the laptop-
1x FireWire
2x USB
1x e-SATA+USB
1x Ethernet
1x VGA
1x HDMI
1x Line-In(Mic)
2x Line Out(Headphones)
Rest everything was default, nothing much changed.
Although in the final delivery I got Creative EP-630 earphones and a Dell Laser mouse with changeable DPI settings and programmable keys on the side.
Now I'll let the benches and screenies do the talking for me and you.

Dell Inspiron Releases 14R-N4010 Laptop

Adobe's Flash to ship on first Android Phone

Marking a departure from the world of iPhone, HTC's new Android-based Hero phone will also come with the ability to handle Flash elements that adorn many Web sites and power YouTube video.

Adobe Systems announced on Wednesday that its Flash Player will be built into the HTC phone, an important step in the company's efforts to spread Flash to mobile phones. The phone, one of several from HTC to use Google's open-source operating system, is scheduled to ship in Europe starting in July and in Asia and North America later in the year.

However, the initial version won't match Flash Player 10, the current version for PCs, which can run programs written with ActionScript 3. Instead, the Android version will handle ActionScript 2 applications written for Flash Player 9 chores, Adobe said. HTC is participating in the Open Screen Project to bring Flash Player 10 to mobile phones through over-the-air updates, though, so Adobe expects fuller Flash support eventually.

"Flash Player 10 for mobile platforms that include Android is expected to be available in the first half of 2010. We are working on delivering a beta of Flash Player 10 in the fourth quarter of 2009," the company said in a statement.

The Flash support will be built into the phone and not available as a download for other Android phone users, Adobe said.

Just having a check mark in a feature list isn't enough to outflank a competitor, but Flash is a significant feature on the Web. It powers many games, streaming videos, and dynamic stock charts, and other elaborate features on Web pages. And Flash is also used for many more dynamic advertisements.

Adobe demonstrated Flash on Android in an online video Wednesday, showing off the technology for watching a trailer at Yahoo Movies, playing the Penguin Swing game, and selecting a region on travel site Expedia. Double-clicking on the Flash element on the Web page runs it full screen.

Samsung Star S5230 Review

Samsung Star S5230

The india's larger manufacturer Samsung has launched their Star S5230 recently.

Specifications: 3 inch touchscreen bar phone, 3.2 MP camera w/o flash, 262K Color TFT Screen, GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth, Music player, FM, 100 MB internal memory, Memory card slot for upto 8gb cards, JAVA™ MIDP 2.0, Document viewer (Doc, Ppt, Xls, Pdf), Mobile Tracker, 1000mAh battery, 92g weight and the rest of the usual features like SMS, MMS, calculator etc.

Accessories: Headset, charger, USB cable, Stylus, Samsung New PC Studio CD, one normal rear cover and one plastic/leather rear cover with front flaps.

Main Review from our sources here :

The phone is a a good looking device featuring a generous 3 inch body with touchscreen for user input. There are only six physical buttons namely Call, End Call/Operation, volume up and down, camera, and lock/unlock phone. The main display is bright and features the basic details like battery level, time, connection strength and also the much hyped about but generally useless widgets.

- The touch interface is itself quite easy to use. It is smooth and and does its job quite well. Scrolling up and down is although much easier with the volume keys than with the touch interface.
- Call quality is good and even when...

signal strength drops the call is not cut off and voice clarity remains.
- There are default wallpapers each of which contain 3 pictures and this can be scrolled left or right to change into any one of the 3 pictures. This works well with the default wallpapers of Samsung but when you see your own wallpapers showing only 1/3rd in the screen you'll realize its a foolish design decision on the part of the developers.
-The camera is pretty good and night shot come out rather well.
-The music initially sounded a little hollow but somehow after a few days it sounds better. The headset is pretty good and volume levels are acceptable.
-FM was iffy. Maybe the phone's positioning wasn't great.
- Connection on the USB to the PC is very fast and although the bluetooth is also 2.1 version you'll find yourself using the USB cable only to transfer files.
- On the security front you have Mobile Tracker technology and you can password protect various parts of the phone like Messaging, phonebook, your files, SIM card etc.
- Messaging is a dream. You can use the standard keypad or you can tilt the phone horizontally and use the QWERTY keypad. You can also use the stylus to write your own message but handwriting recognition is very poor. I tried writing "8" 10-15 times and then only its managed to recognize it.
- A smart unlock feature lets you make a symbol on the phone's screen (even if phone is locked) and if that symbol is a assigned to a person the person is called, if the symbol is assigned to an application then that application opens.
- Browing on the net is definitely fast. It loaded the PC version of sites vey fast with the default browser also. Moving around the websites using the touch interface is very fast, unlike document viewing.
- There are a few preloaded games which are pretty fun to play.
- Document viewing is a letdown. You move around the document with your fingers but its very slow and you'd be barely using the useful stylus because of another bad design decision; the stylus is not fitted into the phone's body.
-Battery wise I was not convinced by the 13 hour advertised battery talktime and in the first few days I used it so heavily that I was charging the phone everyday. But from the fourth day onwards I am using it moderately and seems like it will go on for 3-4 days on a single charge.
-Video player is good. The Samsung New PC Studio software converted some video files and transferred them to the phone. The files played smoothly and were of high video and sound quality. 700 MB files when converted to 500 Mb mp4's played with good video quality on the phone. Video details are: 320x240 resolution, 1200 Bits/sec, 15 fps, MP4
-Photo gallery is so awesome!!!!! Besides, it opens up 2-3 MB photos with ease.
-File management could be much better. If you put 500 wallpapers in one folder then god help you if you want to see the wallpaper whose filename starts with "Z".

Advantages
-Display quality
-Call quality
-Good touch interface
-Battery
-Music and video player does its job
-Camera quite good
-Web browsing (even if its w/o 3G or WiFi)
-8GB memory card support (though I am not even able to fill my 2GB one)
-Messaging a pleasure
-Games are fun
-Samsung New PC Studio s/w works well with the phone

Disadvantages
-Cannot view SMS's while on a phone call. Can only write SMS's and emails during calls
-Document viewing is a pain
-Stylus cannot be attached to the phone's body
-File Manager can be much better
-Have to buy a separate screen guard as default one already is on its way out when you're buying the phone
-Handwriting recognition
-Design decision related to wallpapers in topmost screen

Useless
-Photo Contacts
-Widgets
-Smart Unlock

Price of phone: Rs. 9500 (w/o memory card)

Samsung launches solar-powered phone

India's largest mobile
handset manufacturer Samsung launched a low-cost solar-powered mobile phone, and said it was planning to introduce about 20 more models by year-end.
The new handset, launched under its low-cost line of products -- "Guru" -- at a price of Rs 2,799, has a solar panel on the back, which can be used to charge the battery anywhere the sun is shining.

"We have developed this phone keeping in minds the needs of the consumers, especially for people in areas where the electric supply is unstable," said J S Shin, president and chief executive of Samsung, Southwest Asia.

The phone, christened the "Guru E1107", can provide around 5-10 minutes of talk-time with one-hour of solar charging when the handset is turned off and sunlight has adequate intensity.

"Solar charging can give you enough time to make few important calls when there is no electricity or you are not close to a plug point," said Sunil Dutt, country head of Samsung India. The battery will attain full power with about 40 hours of solar charging.

"But that is really not the intention behind the launch of this phone. It is to enable customers to make a call when there is no electricity," said Dutt.
